Friend, the soil that receives the King!

Matthew 13:18–23 "When anyone hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand it, then the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart … But he who received seed on the good ground is he who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty."

Yesterday we looked at Yeshua (Jesus)'s command to shema, to hear in such a way that we respond. Now the parable takes us deeper, because even the best seed cannot produce a harvest if the ground will not receive it. Notice what never changes in the story. The Sower does not change. The seed does not change. Only the soil changes.

Yeshua identifies the seed as "the Word of the kingdom," and then He tells us exactly where that seed lands: "in his heart." In Hebraic thought, the heart, lev (לֵב), is far more than the seat of emotion. The lev is the inner person, the place of thought, desire, and intentions. It is where life is directed, which is why Proverbs says, "Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life" (Proverbs 4:23). The Kingdom begins its transforming work there.

Yeshua speaks of four types of soil, but this does not mean there are four kinds of people permanently confined to four spiritual categories. Rather, these describe the state of the heart, and such conditions may change: hard soil can be broken up, stones can be removed, thorns can be taken out, and the soil can be prepared.

Even before Yeshua told this parable, the prophets had used the same imagery. Hosea had said, 'Break up your fallow land, for the time has come when you should seek the LORD' (Hosea 10:12), and Jeremiah had repeated this idea: 'Break up your fallow land and do not sow among thorns' (Jeremiah 4:3). Fallow land is not land of no value; it is land which is capable of producing crops but has been left uncultivated. Land which has not been tilled becomes compacted, paths appear on it, weeds take hold, and that which could once produce life becomes resistant to the very seed capable of producing it.

The wayside was the tough footpath that ran through or alongside the field, worn down over the years by continuous use. The farmer sowed the same good seed there, but it couldn't get through the surface. The issue was not the seed. The ground had to be broken up, and in some cases so do we. A heart may harden from disappointment, familiarity, unanswered questions, and repeated compromise. We can keep going over the same part of our hearts so often that we stop noticing how hardened it has become.

There is also the case of rocky ground, on which there is sufficient soil for growth to start but not enough depth for the roots to develop. This is the hazard of spiritual excitement lacking spiritual depth. Something emerges quickly and there may be enthusiasm, perhaps even tears, perhaps a powerful experience with God. But it is precisely where no one is looking that the roots grow, and when the trial comes, that which has no depth cannot endure.

Thorny ground is actually the most dangerous, because the seed does take root there. The problem is that other things grow with it. Yeshua calls these rivals "the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches." The issue is not that nothing is growing, but that too much is. Worry, ambition, and the desire for comfort all grow, along with more responsibilities and desires, until the Word of the Kingdom is crowded out by everything else. That is why Jeremiah's advice matters: "Do not sow among thorns." Sometimes revival begins not by adding something new, but by clearing out what has taken up space that should belong to God.

Yeshua then describes good soil. This kind of soil is not perfect soil, but rather soil that has been prepared by being opened up, deepened, cleared, and made ready to receive the seed. Its potential is amazing—thirtyfold, sixtyfold, or even a hundredfold. The Old Testament gives a clear picture of this. In Genesis, Isaac sowed in the land of Gerar during a time of famine, "he reaped in the same year a hundredfold; and the LORD blessed him" (Genesis 26:12).

A hundredfold harvest in a time of famine. All the circumstances around him indicated scarcity, yet Isaac sowed, God blessed him, and the land yielded more than anyone could have expected. That is what the Kingdom is like. Your fruitfulness is not dependent on the conditions of the age around you. Even in darkness, good soil can receive good seed, and a cultural famine cannot prevent the Word of God from producing life. When the word of the Kingdom comes upon a heart that has been prepared, God will bring about a harvest while everyone else sees only famine.

Friend, you were created for harvest. The King who scatters the seed also prepares the soil, and He knows exactly how to make your heart fruitful. He softens, deepens, clears, and cultivates until His Word can take root and flourish. The seed is alive, the Sower is still sowing, and even in a season of famine, your life is called to produce thirtyfold, sixtyfold, even a hundredfold. Prepare your heart, receive the Word, and expect God to bring forth more than you imagined.
