Friend, you can't perform delicate surgery with a plank in your Eye!

Matthew 7:3-5 And why do you look at the speck in your brother's eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, 'Let me remove the speck from your eye'; and look, a plank is in your own eye?  5 Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother's eye.

Yeshua (Jesus) paints a memorable scene in the Sermon on the Mount. He describes a man who notices a speck in his brother’s eye while ignoring a plank in his own. The picture is almost funny, and that’s intentional. Imagine someone with a board sticking out of his eye, trying to help his brother with a tiny splinter. Yeshua was not only correcting actions. He was revealing a heart issue, using humor so the lesson would stick.

We can spot a tiny bit of sawdust in someone else’s eye, even from far away, but often miss the piece of wood in our own. This isn’t because our eyesight is bad. It’s because we don’t look at ourselves as closely as we look at others. The speck in the other person’s eye might actually be there. Yeshua doesn’t say there’s nothing wrong with the brother. The problem isn’t noticing something in someone else. The problem is seeing faults in others that we ignore in ourselves. The real issue is the order of our actions. We want to fix others before letting God do His deep work in us.

This is where hypocrisy becomes a real danger. Hypocrisy isn’t just struggling with sin — everyone faces weakness. It’s pretending to see clearly while ignoring God’s light in your own heart. It means correcting others without surrender, confronting without repentance, and trying to help someone else when your own vision is clouded.

In Scripture, the eye often stands for how we see and understand things spiritually. Earlier in the Sermon, Yeshua said, "The lamp of the body is the eye." Now He teaches that we can only help others if our own vision is clear. A proud heart sees things wrongly. A wounded heart makes things seem worse. A bitter heart judges harshly. A self-righteous heart focuses on others’ faults and ignores its own.

That’s why Yeshua says, "First remove the plank from your own eye." The word first is full of wisdom. He doesn’t say to never help your brother. He says to start with yourself. First, repent. First, be humble. First, let God search your heart. First, let mercy change you. Only then will you see clearly.

The goal isn’t to stay silent, but to see clearly. Yeshua doesn’t say to ignore your brother. He says that after you remove the plank, you’ll be able to help with the speck in your brother’s eye. The Kingdom cares about restoring people. The speck still needs to be removed, but it should be done by someone who is humble, not proud. God isn’t asking you to stop caring about others. He wants you to let Him clear your vision first, so you can help others with steady hands and clear sight.

There’s a big difference between correcting others out of pride and correcting them out of humility. One hurts, the other heals. One says, I’m better than you. The other says, I’ve needed mercy too, and I want to help you see. Yeshua isn’t teaching His disciples to be critics. He’s teaching them to be healers. But before we can help clear someone else’s vision, we need to let Him heal our own.

Ashrei — blessed is the one who lets the Lord remove the plank before ever reaching for the speck. His vision becomes clear, his heart becomes tender, and his hands become steady. He does not correct from a place of pride, superiority, or impatience. He first kneels at the feet of mercy, where his own sight is healed by grace. Then, when he speaks to his brother, he does not come as a critic looking to expose, but as a healer longing to restore — because mercy changed him before he ever tried to help anyone else.

Friend, let the Lord search your heart and receive His correction as restoration, not shame. There is freedom here. You were never meant to carry the weight of fixing everyone else. You are called to yield yourself fully to the King and let Him begin His work in you. As He clears your vision, heals your heart, and softens your spirit, your life will help others find their way. Your greatest ministry will not come from pointing out the faults of others, but from what God has first done in you — when He healed your eyes and taught you how to perform delicate surgery with compassion, humility, and mercy.
